Dear Commissioner Schmit,
We are writing to bring your attention to the letter we sent yesterday to President Von der Leyen and Commissioner Reynders concerning the recent developments regarding the judiciary system in Romania. We request your assistance in halting any support for any legislative measures related to magistrates’ service pensions in Romania until a thorough assessment and discussion with the Romanian magistrates has taken place.
The proposed measures currently under consideration pose a significant threat to the independence and functionality of the Romanian judiciary system. This not only undermines the social rights of the magistrates but also jeopardizes the rights of all Romanians, who will face delays in accessing timely justice.
It is imperative that the independence of the Romanian judiciary system must not be treated as a bargaining chip during negotiations with the Romanian Government. The integrity and effectiveness of the judiciary system are fundamental to upholding justice and safeguarding the rights of Romanian citizens.
We request you, therefore, the urgent attention to this matter and your support in addressing these concerns.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
